Top 10 Criminally Underrated Anime That you Must Watch

There is a lot of awesome anime series that people are sleeping on for different reasons. These shows are considered underrated among the community and I experienced a lot of this type of anime.

But that’s not what we are gonna talk about today, the anime you are gonna see in this article are beyond “underrated”, in my opinion, it’s unacceptable to see such shows don’t get the attention, fame, and recognition that they deserve!

In this post, I’m gonna share with you the top 10 criminally underrated anime that you must watch before you die! these are 10/10 anime in my book

10. Stop This Sound!

  • Genres: Drama,Slice of Life, Shounen, Romance
  • Episodes: 13 (season 1) + 13 (season 2)
  • Studio: Platinum Vision
  • Story: 9/10
  • Animation: 7/10

This show is about Tokise High School Koto Club and its members that strive for getting a chance to perform at the big national contest

I don’t know anything about Koto, and I also don’t know anything about Piano! and I know that there is a lot of people (anime fans) like me. But when it comes to anime, a show like “Your lie in April” is very popular and a lot of people love it even if they don’t know anything about piano, so why “Stop this Sound” didn’t get the same treatment?

It’s easy! The piano is just way more popular than Koto and people tend to build their first impression based on things like this

Another example is “Haikyuu” which is a sports anime about volleyball. From where I am, volleyball isn’t that popular compared to Basketball and that’s why when I heard of “Kuroku No Basket” I didn’t hesitate to watch it or at least give it a chance in the first place

But at the same time, I didn’t treat “Haikyuu” the same way, when one of my friends recommended it to me I just told him: ” I am not into that” I meant volleyball. But after all the hype and the talk surrounding this show, I found myself obliged to catch up to the anime to see what it’s all about, and WoW! I consider “Haikyuu” as the best sports anime right now! and this though me one thing: You Don’t Need to Enjoy or Like “Something” to Enjoy or Like an Anime About that “Something”

Stop this Sound” falls into this type of show!! the story is so good! the character development of the different members of the club and the growth that they attained is certainly one of the best things about this anime

I can also say that this anime is one of those where the second season takes the entirety of the show to a whole different level so if you like the first part, you will love this show way more after the second one

And by the way, I genuinely think that “Stop this Sound” is better than “Your lie in April” in my opinion, and I loved “Your lie in April” so much!

09. A Place Further Than The Universe

  • Genres: Adventure, Comedy Drama,
  • Episodes: 13
  • Studio: Madhouse
  • Story: 9/10
  • Animation: 8/10

“A place further than the universe,” tells the story of 4 girls that took the challenge of traveling until the end of the world!

what was your favorite new anime of 2018? a year that was packed with so many amazing new shows like: “Run with the wind”,Bunny Girl Senpai”, “Banana Fish”, “Asobi Asobase”, “Grand Blue”, “Hinamatsuri”, “Megalo Box“, and so many more

But for me, it was between two: “A place further than the universe,” and “Violet Evergarden”, and even though I ended up choosing the second one as my personal anime of the year, I still remember to this day how hard it was to make this decision,

in fact, Before episode 10 of “Violet Evergarden” aired, I wasn’t expecting anything to come out and top “A place further than the universe,” and we were just in the beginning of the year! this may tell you how much I loved this show!

“A place further than the universe,” is an anime that tackles self-discovery so well and makes you attached to the characters in a way that makes it easy to understand how they feel and what they want.

08. The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.

  • Genres: Comedy, Slice of life, Supernaturel
  • Episodes: 24 (season 1) + 24 (season 2) + 6 (ONA)
  • Studio: J.C.Staff, Egg Firm
  • Story: 8/10
  • Animation: 7/10

Excluding “Gintama”, this is the best comedy anime I have ever watched!

The story of this anime isn’t complicated at all! you have this kid named Saiki Kusuo who was born with some insane Psychic superpowers that he didn’t ask for . All what Saiki wants is to live a normal and peaceful life but because of his powers, things never go as he plans.

The supporting cast A.K.A the other characters is what makes this anime so comedic and funny, they are the real MVP of the show for sure. Saiki is a serious and cool character, he is not the one who is supposed to make you laugh in this show, it’s the other “goofy” characters surrounding him.

And by the way, Riki Nendou is by far, the funniest anime character I have ever seen in anime.

I watched this anime with fansubs, and I gotta say that the great quality of the subtitles and the way they are done played a big role in making this anime as funny and entertaining as it is, so keep this in mind!

07. Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor

  • Genres: Psychological, Drama, Games
  • Episodes: 26 (season 1) + 26 (season 2)
  • Studio: Madhouse
  • Story: 9/10
  • Animation: 8/10

This show is about a young man called Kaiji who got involved with the gambling world because of the circumstances of his life.

Hands down this anime are one of the few ones that typified the psychological genera as it should be! every time the main faces a difficult situation, as a viewer, you don’t expect the plot armor to kick in and save his skin, because this doesn’t happen in this show.

This anime pushes you to think of a realistic solution or wait for the main character to find one, and what makes it more interesting is that you are not sure if he will be able to achieve that or not. Kaiji is a very smart guy, but he is not the smartest and he doesn’t win every time.

06. Monster

  • Genres: Mystery, Seinen, Psychological, Drama
  • Episodes: 74
  • Studio: Madhouse
  • Story: 9.5/10
  • Animation: 7/10

Now you may disagree with me and say that this show isn’t underrated, it’s quite popular and a lot of people talk about this show and recommend it to others, I know this! but I feel like “Monster” deserves more! In my opinion, This series is the “Attack on Titan” of the early years of the 21st century! at that time, anime wasn’t that popular, yet a series with a heavy plot like this one existed back then and didn’t impact the community as “Attack on titan” did in this decade.

Now let’s reverse the situation, what if Attack on titan aired in 2004, and monster aired in 2022 with better quality and a larger fanbase? don’t you think that Monster will be way more popular than it is?

I’m not saying that “Monster” is better than “Attack on Titan”, but in my opinion, it’s better than “Demon Slayer”, and I know that a lot of people will agree with me! but why people are comparing “Demon Slayer” to “Attack on Titan” instead of “Monster” more often? , it’s simply because “Demon Slayer” is way more popular than “Monster” and this is what I don’t like! and this is why I think that a series like “Monster” is still underrated.

05. Ace of Diamond

  • Genres: Sports, Shounen, Comedy
  • Episodes: 75 (season 1) + 51 (season 2) + 52 (season 3)
  • Studio: Production I.G, Madhouse
  • Story: 8.5/10
  • Animation: 8/10

“Ace of Diamond” is a sports anime about Baseball that I highly recommend to anybody who liked popular sports anime like “Kuroko no Basket” and “Haikyuu” even if they aren’t into this sport.

Ace of Diamond” clearly does things differently in a very interesting and unique way that you don’t see in other sports anime. The character development in this show may seem slow but it’s intentional, it tries to make you see all the struggle and hard work that the characters go through before allowing them to grow as players or even as persons, it tries to make things as realistic as possible, there is no glow up happening between night and day in this show, there is a real reason for everything happening in the story and that’s what makes “Ace of Diamond” the most relatable sports anime out there.

The best thing about this anime in my opinion is the coach, unlike other sports anime where the coach don’t participate that much in the success of the team or the athlete, in “Ace of Diamond”, you can clearly see how important the role of the coach is, whether it is during the matches or even while training his players, the coach always put his special touches that reflect on the performance of the whole team

04. Chihayafuru

  • Genres: Sports, Romance, Comedy
  • Episodes: 25 (season 1) + 25 (season 2) + 24 (season 3)
  • Studio: Madhouse
  • Story: 9/10
  • Animation: 8/10

This anime is about 3 friends that share the same passion, karuta! do you know what is Karuta? no? it doesn’t matter because you will be familiar with it while watching this show, and just like I said with “Stop this Sound” don’t let the theme of a show stop you from trying it!

To be honest with you if it wasn’t for the third season, I would not include this anime on this list, it’s still a great show though but this lastest season took it to a completely different level, the great development that the story had was amazing and surprising at the same time, I wasn’t expecting some specific things to happen this early in the series, but they did and it was perfect!

03. March Comes in Like a Lion

  • Genres: Drama, Slice of Life, shogi
  • Episodes: 22 (season 1) + 22 (season 2)
  • Studio: Shaft
  • Story: 9.5/10
  • Animation: 9/10

Have you ever picked an anime randomly to watch because there was nothing interesting airing in a specific season? this is the case of fall 2016, I couldn’t find anything that fits my taste so I decided to give this anime a go just because I saw the name of the studio behind it, which is studio Shaft

This anime blew my mind after a few episodes, I found myself immersed in the story and build a very strong bond with Rei the main character because I related to him in so many things!

But it’s not just about Rei, this anime always succeeded to bring out and expose the emotions of many characters in a fascinating way that makes you say: “yes! I completely understand what you are feeling”. March Comes in Like a Lion really knows how to use symbolism to make you feel this way

The second season of the show was even better than the first one! introducing new themes to the show and using another way to present the events of the story, the main character here is like a viewer, a narrator, he is not the focus of the story but he grows and becomes a better person by observing other characters going through their struggles standing up against life challenges and overcoming their weaknesses

02. Rainbow: Criminal Seven of Compound Two Cell Six

  • Genres: Drama, Seinen, Historical
  • Episodes: 26
  • Studio: Shaft
  • Story: 9.5/10
  • Animation: 8/10

The events of the story take place in 1955 when 6 delinquents were sent to a reform center after being arrested for serious crimes. There, they met with an elder called Rokurouta Sakuragi that will impact their lives forever.

I really miss this kind of show these days. “Rainbow” is a realistic story with zero plot holes, you may hate or dislike some moments of it but you understand at the same time that if the same situation happens in real life, the results will be the same.

You need to be ready to experience all kinds of violence, torture, sadness, sorrow, depression, and other dark themes before starting this show, but once you finish this series, I promise, you will learn something about life because, without exaggerations, this anime is one of the few ones that impacted my life and the way I see somethings

01. Fruits Basket

  • Genres: Romance,Drama, Supernaturel
  • Episodes: 24 (season 1) + 24 (season 2) + 13 (season 3)
  • Studio:
  • Story: 9.5/10
  • Animation: 8/10

This show is the only one that I can’t win against, think of it like the anime episode that made you cry like a baby but it’s almost all the series, especially season 3. Every episode of “Fruits Basket” is at least a 9/10, the amount of emotions I felt while I was watching this show is something I have never experienced before.

I don’t need to rewatch a certain from this show to get emotional and cry, just by thinking about it and replaying it in my head, I get into that state, I’m super serious!

“Fruits Basket” isn’t just a shoujo anime, it’s a show that tackles multiple themes and does a perfect job in the implementation of the story, it’s in my top 10 anime of all the time and Honda Tohru is my favorite female main character in all anime
